With pressure on students, teachers and schools to perform to ever-increasing standards, monitoring grades is a central part of life in education.

It is worth remembering however:

Knowledge of the grade itself does not help the teacher to teach.

Knowledge of the grade itself does not help the student to learn.

Two students will have entirely different explanations for working at/achieving the same grade.

Even when student grades are broken down into performance within reading, writing, speaking and listening, they have still not been fully unpacked.

Grades often arrive towards the end of a learner’s journey: student support and direction needs to start from the very beginning and seek to signpost their development at every stage.
